NEW Ireland is blessed with beautiful white sandy beaches, a clean ocean, abundant seafood, peaceful people, a rich culture and the best sunsets around, Governor Sir Julius Chan, pictured,  said.
Sir Julius said although the province’s environment and resources attracted outsiders to the province, it was important that they had proper infrastructure in place for everyone to benefit from.
He said Kavieng continued to improve under the major road upgrading work on the second phase of the Kavavu Avenue and other main streets.
Sir Julius said the road from Kavieng Airport to town highlighted the area.
“Every phase, every milestone achieved is a step toward making Kavieng town equal to the best towns in PNG and the Pacific,” he said
Other projects in the works to improve Kavieng were the installation of solar streetlights to light up Kavieng, the construction of the new Kavieng market and a separate fish market.
The waterfront where the current market is located would be converted into a recreational area with cafeterias and a leisure park for locals and visitors.
The installation of the 13 solar streetlights out of the total of 48 allocated for the Lavongai LLG – Enelava with four streetlights, Tsoi with four, Konomatalik with three and Umbukul with two.
“It is the Peoples Progress Party’s government policy to lift the standard of living of all people in isolated communities,” Sir Julius said.

  • Is this bloke the same old man who has been in-charge of NI for close to half a century?
It is a disgrace talking about ideas now. Retire, go roll your mat on your beach and watch the sunset.
