THE Southern Highlands government has committed K500,000 to care centres in the Nipa-Kutubu district still recovering from the effects of the earthquake.
Governor William Powi and acting provincial administrator Thomas Eluh gave K50,000 cash and a commitment of another K50,000 to people living at the Mulumi station care centre in the Bosave local level government areas.
He made another commitment of K400,000 to the care centre at Pimaga.
The commitments were made as part of the Highlands custom of saying sorry to the relatives of the people who lost their lives and those badly affected.
Powi thanked agencies and countries assisting the people with relief supplies and medications such as Australia and New Zealand.
“It’s a mammoth task and the provincial government alone cannot address the disaster,” he said.
“It needs participation and proper coordination so that relief supplies reach the affected people.”
Powi also called for proper and efficient distribution of relief supplies to the people who needed them.
“The district disaster assessment team must be honest in getting accurate statistics and data so that affected people are not missed out,” he said.
He said from past experience, affected people did not get relief supplies which were diverted to other centres which did not deserve them.
Eluh called on people to help each other. “We must leave our differences aside and help those affected people,” he said.
