AS part of New Guinea Energy Ltd’s (NGE) continuing commitment to the people and communities of Papua New Guinea, the company is sponsoring a rugby clinic currently underway in Port Moresby.
The clinic for boys between the ages of 15-18 started on Monday and will finish on Friday at Port Moresby International School oval.
NGE has engaged two rugby coaches for the teams participating.
It is expected that the clinics will be held on a quarterly basis, in varying locations across PNG.
PNG Rugby chief executive officer Shane Horwarth said: “We are very pleased to be able to promote the ame of rugby to the young men within the PNG community and thank New Guinea Energy Ltd for theinitiative”.
NGE is a sponsor of the Queensland Reds rugby team. Through the sponsorship the company will promote and create goodwill within PNG through the game of rugby with PNG-born Australian captain Will Genia who was recently appointed as its ambassador.
Genia supports the new initiative in his home country and said he “hopes these rugby clinics will help promote confidence to take part in team sport, in particular rugby, and foster a stronger sense of community within the country”.
Genia will likely attend one of the clinics should his commitments to the Queensland Reds and Australian Wallabies allow.
NGE acknowledges his achievements in promoting rugby to the people of PNG and thank him for his assistance.
NGE has engaged Total Rugby Concepts (TRC) to conduct the clinics in PNG.
TRC managing director Dan Robotham said the company had run similar clinics in the Solomon Islands and were currently establishing rugby exchange programmes with the Solomon Islands, Tonga and Fiji.
The aim of the programme is to give keen rugby players from these nations the opportunity to do short stay exchanges in Australia (5-10 weeks), attend school and play some rugby.
“We are passionate about using rugby as a vehicle to develop cross-cultural relationships and to provide life opportunities for young people and in the near future will be looking to offer some young rugby players from PNG the opportunity to get involved in our Pacific rugby exchange programme,” he said.
