FIVE of the 20 prisons in the country did not record any breakout this year, Correctional Service Commissioner Stephen Pokanis says.
“The number of escapees this year is also fewer. There were fewer than 200 escapees compared with more than 300 in previous years,” he added.
The prisons that achieved a clean slate this year are Milne Bay’s Giligili, Western’s Ningirum, Northern’s Biru, West Sepik’s Vanimo and Chimbu’s Barawagi.
Pokanis said Bomana led with the highest number of 20 escapees while the other prisons reported fewer than five escapees.
He said eight of the Bomana Prison fugitives had been recaptured together with 10 others who escaped in 2016.
Pokanis commended his men for “a job well done” this year despite the challenges posed by the Coronavirus.
