No funds to cater for foreign criminals

CRIMINALS or offenders from other countries such as Indonesia are often freed because police do not have funds to process or cater for them, says Assistant Commissioner Police (ACP) border command Peter Philip.
“Funding is an ongoing issue and a major challenge for the police force that needs to be addressed,” he said.
ACP Philip said most of the police operations under his division dealt with international offenders but they would go set free due to lack of funding.
“Funding is the main reason why most of the illegal migrants are freed because we do not have the funds to keep them in the cell blocks,” he said.
ACP Philip said police officers were using their initiative to feed detainees.
“Illegal migrants from Indonesia who are now in the Daru Police Station cells have to be released now because they is no money to buy food to feed them,” he said.
“Because there are no funds available, I have given approval to the Western police commander in Western to consult supplies in Daru to get K2,000 worth of food rations on credit.”
