No good reason to get rid of Juffa

Letters, Normal

I WOULD like to commend Customs Commissioner Gary Juffa and express my disgust over the moves to remove him from his current position.
I enjoy reading about his accomplishments and no-nonsense approach to dealing with law breakers who have been getting away with blatantly breaking our country’s laws because they (criminals) are protected by unscrupulous politicians and bureaucrats.
Amidst all the doom and gloom, news reports about corruption, run-down government infrastructure and services, tribal fight, crime and so on, it is like a fresh breath of air reading about the feats of Juffa and his dedicated team.
At least they are touching the tip of an iceberg and that is a start although they still have a long way to go.
The common people appreciate what Juffa is doing and has achieved.
My plea to the government is to take note of what he is doing and equip him with all the necessary tools such as funding, manpower, power and authority to prosecute offenders without fear or favour.
Juffa deserves a pat on the back and encouragement because money spent on improving his work will immediately be realised by increased revenue from duties that are not being paid now, reduction in import-export fraud, collection of long outstanding dues from unscrupulous businessmen and women who fail to pay the government taxes, duties, etc.
Furthermore, if the government wants to have some control in the influx of aliens into our country, it will be prudent to consider such a person of Juffa’s calibre for the Immigration directorate.
I am sidetracking here, but PNG is sitting on a time bomb here due to the influx of all these aliens and a Solomon Islands situation could occur in PNG.
Juffa will not be able clean up the rot that is eating away at the fabrics of our country.
Surely the government can see that he is heading in the right direction and he and his team should be supported with more funding, manpower, resources and authority to ensure that offenders are caught and punished.
Transparent and visible actions such as those by the Customs division under the leadership of Juffa bring a sense of hope that not all is lost and there are some leaders who have the welfare of their country and its people at heart.
