WITH no trial match to prepare for the 2019 Q-Cup season, SP PNG Hunters coach Michael Marum will resort to using opposed sessions in camp to decide on his the final squad.
Marum did not give any numbers regarding the final squad but briefly mentioned that out of the current 32-man training in camp, some would be released before the start of the season.
“We still have that 32-man train-on squad in camp and we are into our ninth week now and some are doing fine but some still need to put more effort into training,” Marum said.
“Without any trial games with the Brisbane Broncos not be coming up we will train and have trials against each other so that should be enough to get us prepared for the season,” he said of the aborted Feb 23 pre-season trial at the National Football Stadium.
“A lot of work needs to be done with our new players and their combinations and a trial would be good for us unfortunately that’s not happening.
“From the 32-man squad, some players will leave camp but for now we’ve decided to keep everyone in camp because the Digicel Cup season won’t start until April.
“So if we start sending players back then they will be at their local clubs and might not be training the way we want them to because we’ve put in a good eight weeks in all of them.
“When competition starts we don’t expect to have an all new side maybe 80 percent of all our players will come from last year and year before.
“We got some ideas on who will fill in the halves or our spine which is going to be totally new and when we have our own opposed sessions we’ll be in a better position to decide especially on the halves pairing.”
