No side effects for measles vaccination: Doctor

THE measles injection has no side effects and is good for babies and kids under the age of five, says Dr Joseph Birisi.
The chief executive officer of the Southern Highlands health authority is warning people spreading false information about the injection to stop misleading the public.
He said those found spreading rumours would be arrested and charged accordingly.
He said this on Thursday in Mendi town during the launching of the integrated measles-rubella and round six polio vaccinations.
Birisi said the measles injection was to protect infants up to five years old against the disease.
“There is no side-effect, it’s very important for babies and kids under the age of five to get polio drops and measles injections,” he said.
Birisi said the vaccination programme would run for three weeks in the province and urged parents to take their kids to the nearest vaccination sites and ensure that their kids were vaccinated.
He thanked World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nation International Children Emergency Fund (Unesco) for sponsoring the programme.
He also thanked Oil Search Foundation for being a partner in the campaign.
Birisi announced that Global Alliance Vaccine Immunisation (Gavi) would spend K5 million over three years to revamp the routine immunisation programme in health facilities and clinic sites from this year after the round six of polio and measles-rubella exercise.
