No unnecessary burning of rubbish and grassland, says Allan

THE Department of Environment and Conservation is taking the lead in fighting the unnecessary burning of rubbish and grasslands in the country, especially Port Moresby.
In a media statement yesterday, the department said it was taking the step in response to predictions by the weather office of a looming dry season.
Minister Benny Allan said the lessening of bushfires could help minimise the impact of the drought on top-soil erosion, environment degradation and related problems affecting human life and health.
“With hotter and drier weather conditions predicted over the coming months and mid-next year, we are appealing to Port Moresby city residents and people in other provinces to refrain from unnecessarily burning bush or rubbish,” Allan said in the statement.
He also urged all media organisations and corporate citizens to assist in promoting the Bushfire Prevention Appeal.
