THERE is no suspected coronavirus case in Vanimo, West Sepik, says Health and HIV/AIDS Minister Jelta Wong.
He said two Australian citizens caught crossing the border without 14-day quarantine time and clearance were held and been quarantined.
“The two are quarantined outside Vanimo town area and will be allowed to travel once they complete the 14 days quarantine period,” he said.
Meanwhile, an officer at the West Sepik Hospital Bart Saip told The National yesterday that the situation in West Sepik was okay and that they had already started taking precautionary measures.
“Currently, our gateway to Indonesia is closed for an indefinite period of time, even the traditional crossing has been stopped,” he said.
“We are working closely with the Department of Border and Security and other relevant government agencies.
“We are also in contact with our neighbours on the other side of the border and at the moment, there are no confirmed or even suspected cases in the province,” Saip said.
“The town is carrying on as usual, it’s just normal business for everyone. But we are enforcing strict monitoring on the borders, both land and sea.
“So travelling in or out by boat is restricted at the moment,” he said.

  • Health Ministers statement on todays National front page stating NO VIRUS CASE IN VANIMO does not make any sense at all. Is Vanimo the only route where virus will entre the country? What have you in place for the expatriate mining workers who are flying in and out from Virus affected countries? There is no measures inplace for tracking and monitoring this kind of people movement and yet you are declaring Vanimo as virus free. Health Minister you are not the right person carrying that improtant portfolio and you narrow minded and shallow actions cant safe the lifes of people of this country once virus enters the country. Think big as a minister responsible and act on it.
