NOMINATIONS for the 12 categories in the 24th  SP Sports Awards are now open and will close on April 1 before the award nigh on May 4 at the Crown Plaza hotel in Port Moresby.

During the official launch yesterday at the SP Brewery Kettle in Port Moresby SP managing director Stan Joyce said with the success of the 2015 Pacific Games there would be a record number of nominations.

PNG Olympic Committee secretary general Auvita Rapilla said the 2016 SP Sports Awards will take place under the theme “Celebration” following the success of the 2015 Pacific Games. Rapilla said because of the success of the games they would be expecting a record number of nominations in each category.

“The flood of nominations will also give the selection panel headed by chairman Moses Koiri a hard task when it comes to announcing the final nominees,” she said.

Rapilla said with their (PNGOC) continuous partnership with SP Brewery they would also like the PNG Sports Foundation to be part it to spread nominations to rural areas.

A total of K35,000 distributed across the 12 categories is up for grabs.

Rapilla said the annual event was organised to recognise the success of athletes both locally and abroad.

She is encouraging the public to get nomination forms from the PNGOC office so they can be part of the awards by recognising the success and achievements of athletes in the 12 categories that are up for grabs.
