Northern man who assaulted woman granted bail

A NORTHERN man alleged to have assaulted a woman from Southern Highlands on Jan 19 this year has been granted bail by the Waigani Committal Court.
In setting his bail at K200, Magistrate Cosmas Bidar ordered the defendant Elliot Dopu, 24, from Ijivitari, not to interfere with any witnesses, including the complainant, Anita Kundiri, from Kagua.
Before adjourning the case to April 5 to allow for police investigations, he ordered the accused – charged with grievous bodily harm – to remain in the National Capital District throughout the case Police alleged that on Jan 19 on Waiwai Street, Erima, Dopu slapped Kundiri across her chest after an argument, resulting in the complainant losing balance and falling awkwardly.
The complainant had allegedly been drinking the day before until the time of the alleged offence which contributed to her losing balance easily.
Police alleged that Dopu continued to attack Kundiri before frustrated bystanders chased him away and he was later arrested.
