NORTHERN administrator Trevor Magei announced last Tuesday that the province registered 17 new Covid-19 cases, its biggest single day community transmission to date.
“Results coming in from test swabs sent to Port Moresby are confirming positive cases as well as results from rapid test kits that are used by our medical teams,” he said.
Northern recorded eight cases the previous week of which six of the infected were hospital employees, one a Higaturu Oil Palm employee and one a Bank Sout Pacific (BSP) Popondetta employee.
Magei said contact tracing was done to identify another three more positive cases, bringing the total to 11 confirmed cases on April 19.
The following day, results of a third batch of samples sent to Port Moresby confirmed 17 positive cases of which 13 were Popondetta General Hospital employees.
This brings to a total of 28 registered Covid-19 cases recorded in about two weeks.
Magei said Northern had 28 cases and the numbers might continue to surge as people continued to go for testing and contact tracing was carried out.
