NORTHERN Governor Gary Juffa and the people of Oro have welcomed the signing of the contract for the construction of four bridges in the province.

The K103 million contract was signed between the State and the contractor Works department last week.

The project has been co-founded by the Papua New Guinea Government and the Australian Government through AusAID.

The bridges will be built over the Kumisi, Girua, Embogo and Eroro rivers.

Juffa said the bridges were washed away during the 2007 flooding brought by Cyclone Guba which caused great damage to infrastructure, properties and businesses.

He said although funding was provided five years ago, past governments in the country had failed to use the funds to carry out repairs.

“I thank the Papua New Guinea Government and the people of Australia and their government for helping the people of Oro. This is the greatest gift and a breath of fresh air for us,” he said.
