Not the original wig culture of Hela
The National, Monday 25th March 2013
I AM sick and tired of seeing Hela people in Port Moresby wearing wigs during special events.
Our wig culture is beautiful, unique and it takes three to four years
to grow by young boys.
It attracts foreigners to visit PNG, generating income and indirectly boosting our economy.
But some Helas who grew up in Port Moresby and other towns and cities create a different culture altogether compared with the original Hela culture.
Their way of decoration is different.
Some old men who have been residing in the urban areas for more than 20 to 30 years are claiming they know everything about Hela culture.
What they did was to collect different hair from different people and weave into a wig.
But it produced different colours of hair on the wig and creates a bad image for Hela culture.
Outsiders would think it is the original wig but it is not.
