THE country spent over K70 billion in the past nine years but there is little or nothing to show for it, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said.
O’Neill told a gathering at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby that poor managers and administrators misused the funds and failed to provide services to the people.
O’Neill was invited by Michael Kandiu to launch a new non-government organisation – NCD Grassroots Network Foundation – formed to provide services to settlers in Port Moresby.
O’Neill said the “stupidity” of leaders and “unwise” decisions made in the past had cost the country a lot of money.
He said mines such as Ok Tedi, Lihir, Panguna and other resource projects had been in operation for such a long time but money derived from them had disappeared.
O’Neill said the 2012 election was crucial “because right leaders must be voted into parliament to properly manage the country’s revenue and resources, including money derived from the first shipment of gas from the LNG project in 2014”.
“We need good leadership in the country for ourselves, our children and our people,” he said.
