POLICE in Indonesia say they shot a PNG citizen who had escaped from prison while serving time for drug-smuggling in Jayapura when he tried to assault officers.
Jayapura City deputy police commander Senior Commissioner Gustav Urbinas said Brian Apo Kavani, 41, from Kainantu, Eastern Highlands was shot in both legs when he attacked officers from the narcotic investigation unit with a bush knife.
“Apo is a notorious drug smuggler and a serial prison escapee,” Urbinas told Papua police media.
“He had escaped from the Doyo narcotic jail in Sentani in 2018 after being sentenced by an Indonesian Court for drug-smuggling.
“He was caught for drug smuggling while on the run and sentenced in 2019.
“He escaped again from Doyo prison.
“This is the third time he has been caught for drug smuggling while on the run.”
Urbinas said they managed to arrest Kavani and another suspect who alledgedly had three packages of dried marijuana.
They were arrested while driving near Hamadi Beach.
“After receiving the information we immediately pursued and captured them around Hamadi and confiscated the packages,” he said.
Kavani’s accomplice was an Indonesian ex-convict.
Meanwhile, Jayapura-based PNG consul-general Geoffrey Wiri said Kavani was at the Bayankara hospital in Abepura awaiting an operation to remove the bullets in his legs.
“The hospital requires payment before the operation.
“No payment has been made. After he is operated on and after recovery, he will be escorted back to Doyo Baru Jail.”

  • You got what you deserve. Excellent result Papua New Guinean man. A kind of attitude you wanted to portray to Indonesian government. PNG ol bai isi isi lo yu but Indonesia em bai hard ya, bai yu kisim blo yu yet na go.

  • Can we look after our people here in PNG honestly so they won’t go to anther place putting themselves in illegal activities. “Please create employment here in PNG.”

  • Em nau , hevi ya !!! What a shame, painting a bad image of our beautiful nation abroad.

  • Once again we see the appalling greed, spite and corruption of Indonesian cops. In PNG the police only ask for 200 kinas to let crims go free, but the Indonesians demanded double that and then shot the guy! Disgusting.

  • There is nothing in the news that Indonesian police asked him for money. This guy and his accomplishes need to face the Indonesian law and if they are handed the death penalty than they should be hanged in Indonesia. They are a liability to PNG and Indonesia. Our Consul-General in Jayapura need not spend PNG money to pay for his operation or medicall bills. Let him die as this is what he expected if caught doing the same drug peddling.

  • Spending money to save a serial offender, you’ve got to be serious!!!. Let him rot in jail.

  • Let the Law deal with him according. Do not support such people who contribute to distruction of peaceful societies.

  • How is it that the police shot him in both legs. Are they poor shots or had he already surrendered when shot? If the latter, they are no better than common criminals themselves.

  • It is annoying to see this Papua New Guinean donkey painting a bad image of our country. Hope he faces the full consequences for his deeds by the Indonesian government.

  • Well all of us must think about what is happening in our country and the struggles we face, day in day out so he’s probably trying to feed himself or others who depends on him,who knows….the government doesn’t care about he’s people to my observation. We commented on him because he’s on our national newspaper but what about the homeless and unfortunate ones roaming around the every streets in the country.
I suggest all you who point fingers or blame game should think about yourself and your family unless you can help in one way or another.
So let the government spend money for whatever trouble he’s in because he’s our country man regardless.

  • Lazziness put him behind bars. Work your land, and you will see the benefits from it.
Nothing much to say, let him serve his term.

  • Same person for the third time? If he doesn’t gets locked up, he will still continue to do it again. Attitude problem. Very shameful for PNG

  • Sorry for him. He was trying to make money for his ends meet. PNG government should create employments to engage such people so that they earn for their survival, and at the same time contribute towards nation building.

  • Lets all make comments please think of your self, we all have land to cultivate and sustain our living but the problem is our government of the day cannot provide basic services like road link, bridges and airstrip to make it easy for us to transport our goods to the market that’s why you see this our fellow country man doing that.
Please government is a shame to our country so do something to improve the living standard of the rural population.

  • PNG is well blessed by Natural Resource compare with other countries around the world why waiting for the Government of the day to support you.Just a simple agriculture rule from Genesis Cultivate the Land .If he can plant Kaukau & sell those kaukau he will be happy

  • Em hevi blo graun. Graun stap lo u lo planim coffi, salim na kaikai na stap.

Life in there is the hardest, because you left your family, wife and children behind to be in another province. Usim het na wokim samtin
