THE 4th National Souths Basketball League (NSBL) championship will be held next weekend despite the heavy rains that had caused huge flooding in Madang last Friday.
NSBL president Silas Nicky said on Monday that the tournament would go ahead as planned.
Nicky added that six basketball courts had already been secured while another was yet to be confirmed for the championship.
The assistant coordinator for the tournament, Raymond Parangkei confirmed on Monday that the games would be held at the Laiwaden oval, Madang Technical College, Divine Word University, Holy Spirit while the Gospel Lighthouse was yet to be confirmed for the games on Friday night.
“We are hoping that there will not be any rain when the games start next week. But we are pretty sure the rain will not affect the games because it only rained last week and the place looks okay.
“It still looks dull and I am hoping the skies will be clear next week,” Parangkei said.
He also confirmed that Madang would be field five teams – three teams in the women’s and two in the men’s divisions.
They are Madang Hergo Motors Souths (men andwomen), Madang Hergo Commodity Souths Stars (men and women) and Mad Mothers Souths (women).
Also 21 teams out of the 44 that have confirmed participate have paid their K500 nomination and are getting ready to travel to Madang for the tournament.
The tournament has also attracted teams from Port Moresby, Lae and Ramu.
Most of the players from the Port Moresby sides are selected from the NCD Suburban Sports Association basketball competition held at the Ela Beach.
However, there will also be a women’s team from the Capital Basketball League challenge.
Nicky said except for CBL Nips Souths, Ela Beach Souths had already met requirements.
The deadline for the fees is set for Friday and Nicky is expecting most of the teams to pay.
The fees can be deposited to the NSBL BSP account No: 1003574637 at the Port Moresby branch or more information can be obtained from Nicky on 73916931.
