Number of Lutheran schools increasing

RECENT figures have shown that the number of elementary schools in the country under the Evangelical Lutheran church of PNG (ELCPNG) has increased, says a church education official.
Acting Lutheran national education secretary Elisha Wagga said there were 3,000 elementary schools in the country, of which, 700 were located in Morobe.
Wagga said ELCPNG had 23 high schools in the country and a growing number of secondary schools.
He said the church was doing its part in supporting education in the country.
“We carry out visitations and inspections to government schools, advise them and also recommend their teachers for courses as well,” he said.
“This is to help the teachers and equip them to teach according to the standards-based education system which is being brought back.
“They (government) need to equip their teachers.
“We are working with the Government, under the church-government partnership, to bring education services to our people
“Through this programme, the government is paying teachers in our school and giving subsidies such as the TFF (tuition free fee) funds to ELC schools.”
