THE 2018-19 Eastern Highlands Governors Cup rugby league challenge is set to kick off later this month in Eastern Highlands, Numu Cup chairman Noran Torosa says.
He said each of the eight districts in the province would field two teams in the competition that kicks off on Jan 17 in Kainantu (eastern) and Goroka (western) on Jan 20.
Torosa said Obura-Wonenara, Kainantu, Okapa and Henganofi districts with University of PNG and University of Goroka would play in Kainantu while Lufa, Ungai-Bena, Goroka, Daulo, Divine Word University and University of Technology would play at the Sir Danny Leahy Oval in Goroka.
“The top two teams from the eastern and western ends would meet for the final in Goroka the following weekend, the winner will eventually walk away with the cup and cash prize of K10,000,” Torosa said.
He last season’s teams would return with the inclusion of a new team from each district and the four universities. “A compulsory K250 affiliation fee will be paid by each team before the Numu Cup kicks off, team managements are advised to contact the two coordinators,” Torosa said.
Coordinators Elmo Pasero (71524510) for the eastern end and Garnet Auwo (79245617) for western end.
Torosa said the Numu Cup concept was to identify raw talents from rural district.
“The challenge is one avenue where Digicel Cup teams could scout for talents in Eastern Highlands,” he said. He said the tournament was an good way to keep youths away from drugs, alcohol and law and order issues.
