O’Neill gives K250,000 for nurses symposium

 THE Nurses’ Symposium to be hosted in Mendi next week is on a path of success thanks to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and other sponsors. 

Speaking at a media conference in Port Moresby yesterday, Papua New Guinea Nurses’ Association president Sr Eimi Kaptigau said their appeal for funds for the symposium was successful. 

“The estimated budget for the nurses’ symposium was K100,000, but we have received K693,900 already for the symposium from sponsors alone,” Kaptigau said. 

O’Neill donated K250,000 and presented a cheque for the amount to symposium chairman, Benedict Laba.

Three hundred nurses, community health workers, health extension officers and health practitioners will be attending the symposium.

Sixteen research papers will be presented as well as presentations from the association’s stakeholders in Nambawan Super and Telikom PNG.

“The participants (nurses) are eager to attend this symposium but are to meet their own travel costs,” Kaptigau said. 

“The symposium is the only avenue where nurses can come together to present research papers and share ideas. 

“From the symposium, a lot will be learnt on how we can improve and do things differently.  

“We will commit our efforts to service delivery and we are now confident that the prime minister has realised the importance of nurses by making a donation.”
