WITH political parties engaging in talks to form a new government, caretaker Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has once again kept his word by fulfilling a K150,000 commitment he had made to Waigani Primary School, in the National Capital District, last year.
Soon after he took office last August, O’Neill visited the University of Papua New Guinea’s Waigani campus where he met students and teachers and gave an undertaking to improve their facilities.
Present at that meeting were students from the Waigani Primary School who thanked O’Neill for taking the burden of paying school fees away from their parents by introducing the free education policy.
To show his appreciation, O’Neill promised the Waigani Primary School students and teachers K150,000.
That money was delivered to the school last Friday by the O’Neill’s chief-of-staff, Gideon Oli.
“The Prime Minister is passionate about educating young Papua New Guineans like yourselves,”Oli said.
“He believes that by doing so, many of you will become great leaders in future. His government will continue to support education and make it accessible for all.
“His government introduced the free education policy.
“However, with the introduction of free education comes lots of responsibility and this funding will assist meet some of these responsibilities.”
He said the money would be used to build a new science laboratory for the school.
The students, teachers and parents who witnessed the handover were overjoyed and thanked O’Neill for his help.
