OBE to be refined

EDUCATION Minister James Marape has given an undertaking that the outcome-based education (OBE) system will be refined and tailored to meet Papua New Guinea’s needs.
Marape told The National yesterday that deficiencies in implementing the OBE were due to lack of capacity by schools.
“We will be working to ensure that schools are properly equipped and we will bring in quality interventions like making sure that schools are properly resourced with school materials, books, libraries and infrastructure.
“I appeal to Papua New Guineans to give us the next five years with continued government interventions to make a re-modelled OBE system work,” Marape said.
He said OBE, like any other system, could work to Papua New Guinea’s specifications and requirements if critics brought in their findings to the Education Department to be considered in the coming reviews.
Marape said not every child would go to school for employment as there were limited oppotrunities in the formal employment sector.
“We have to develop and harness the child to his or her full potential, to be an integral part of society and to live within the community as an educated person.
“OBE must be tailored to meet our needs and not modelled like that of other Western countries.”
