Observe traffic signs at intersections

Almost half of the accidents in Papua New Guinea happen at intersections, Police Director Traffic, Joe Joseph, says.
“You must not drive into an intersection without blocking the road, neither should you park at an intersection blocking the view of other drivers.
“Parking into an intersection poses a risk to drivers and is an offence under the Motor Traffic Act.”
He said drivers must be careful when driving up to a corner.
“They must also remember that when they are driving on busy roads they must still give way to any vehicle on their right hand side.
“When your vehicle and another vehicle are approaching a corner at the same time, and if you both drove on, there would be a collision.
“If the other vehicle is on your right hand side, you must let him go first.
“To do this, you must stop or slow down, so that vehicle goes first in front of your vehicle.
“If you are going to turn right at a corner or other place, you must let any vehicle that is coming towards you pass by your vehicle first before you turn,” he said.
He said a roundabout was also an intersection, thus when approaching a roundabout, always remember to take the outer lane prior to exit.
“If you are continuing, then take the inner lane until you exit the next road junction.”
He said the traffic rule of always giving way to your right applies to intersections and it was very important to observe and follow traffic signs to avoid accidents.
“Always give way to the vehicle that are already in the roundabout. A round about sign and a give way sign always be there as you approach the roundabout,” he said.
