Office informs people of its role
THE Public Solicitors Office is carrying out awareness to inform the public about its roles and functions, Public Solicitor Leslie Mamu says.
Mamu said that not everyone was aware of the kind of work and services that the public solicitor provided.
“Not everyone knows the office and its functions or that we are their lawyers,” he said.
Mamu said the role of the Office of the Public Solicitor was to provide criminal defence for the public.
“The mandate of the office is to provide criminal defence but we also extend our services to civil matters,” he said.
“The mandate has not changed and that is the primary duty of the public solicitor.”
Mamu said because of the importance of people knowing about their role, they have a separate committee dedicated for organising awareness programmes.
“We have a distinct committee in place and over the years, we have gone to villages and schools,” he said.
“In Central and Gulf, we have actually gone for awareness because we can access these two provinces by road.
“In other branches, we have our lawyers also travelling out into the community.
“We also have a Facebook page and webpage set up where we have a posting done to inform the public on what we do.
“We also have pamphlets and brochures sent out to the branches and it is put up on the court notice boards.”
