Office to get backing for more debate on law
The National, Wednesday July 2nd, 2014
THE Government will support the Registrar of Political Parties with resources to conduct further consultation on the revised Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates, Finance Minister James Marape (pictured) says.
Marape, also the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, said the Government was not in a hurry to push the revised law through Parliament.
Marape assured the country that should the law be passed, it would be implemented from 2017.
He said Government would allow the registrar to advise on the level of consultation his office needed.
“Our sincerity in this is in the fact that we want implementation of this law to come into effect in 2017,” Marape said.
He said the Government was intact in terms of its numerical strength and would allow the Prime Minister to complete his term in office.
Marape also said the consultation on OLIPPAC was not a People’s National Congress Party agenda.
“We are told by very reliable public servants that most officers in the offices of the Attorney-General, State Solicitor and Registry of Political Parties support this except for one or two who have their own reasons,” he said.
“Just (to make sure) that we’re doing the right thing, we’re sending it back for consultation, allow them to go through the country and consult.”
