Officer appears in court for rape

A reserve police officer charged with rape and unlawful deprivation of liberty appeared for arraignment at the Waigani Committal Court on Friday.
Benjamin Bala, from Tubuserea in Central, allegedly kept a woman locked up against her will and raped her after he arrested her and two other men on June 22.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar read the charges to Bala in tokpisin and told him that the case was new.
“Police will conduct investigations and collect statements from witnesses and the court will deliberate on it,” Bidar told Bala.
On June 22, the woman and two  men were arrested by Bala for allegedly drinking in a public place.
It was alleged that Bala took them to the Boroko police station and locked up the men. He took the woman to his office and locked her in. He allegedly raped and kept her.
Bala will return to court on August 11. His bail was extended.
