A POLICEMAN was caught by his superior drunk and collecting money from motorists at a roadblock he had set up along the Watabung section of the Highlands Highway.
The incident happened at the weekend.
The policeman has been suspended for 21 days while investigations are made, says Eastern Highlands
police commander Superintendent David Seine Jr.
“I drove along the highway to Watabung and caught the policeman red-handed collecting money from motorists, passengers and other members of the public,” Seine said.
“He used the money to drink beer and got drunk,.”
Seine confirmed the roadblock was not authorised by the police.
“To make it even worse, the policeman, a commissioned officer, knowingly breached rules and regulations to collect money from the public and use the money to get drunk,” Seine said. “This is a ridiculous behaviour of a policeman. He was caught red-handed and is now suspended for 21 days.”
Seine said the officer would be arrested and charged after 21 days and transferred out of the Watabung police station.
“Any roadblock along the Eastern Highlands section of the Highlands Highway is supposed to be conducted by members of the Highway Patrol and the roadblock must be authorised by authorities,” Seine said. “I will not tolerate any more illegal roadblocks in the province. A policeman caught setting illegal roadblocks to collect cash will be suspended.”
