POLICE in Wabag district, Enga, have thanked the people for observing a relatively peaceful and crime-free Christmas and New Year.

Wabag Police Station Commander Insp Epenas Nili attributed that to a change in attitude, with people appreciating the many services provided for them plus the importance of respecting the law.

“The people of Wabag are changing, which is a great achievement,” Nili said.

“Unlike in past years, Wabag was known for violence and killing, but it has changed dramatically.”

Nili said there were no major incidents and accidents reported.

“The Akom-Surinki section of the Highlands Highway that runs through Wabag district, bordering Wapenamanda, at Akom, and Laiagap-Porgera, at Surinki government station, was trouble-free during Christmas and New Year,” Nili said.

Nili said police set up roadblocks along the Highlands Highway and patrolled residential areas on a 24-hour basis.

He thanked police officers for their dedication and commitment.

“At the New Year roadblocks, four people were arrested, charged and locked up for drinking alcohol in vehicles,” Nili said.

Nili said the people of Wabag district were starting to appreciate the importance of government services and the improvement to their standards of living.

“Many development projects in the province have contributed to the positive behaviour, lifestyle and mindset of the people,” Nili said.
