COMMUNITY Development secretary Anna Solomon has confirmed that the appointment of Augustus Wagambio as civil registrar was properly done and his position duly gazetted.

Wagambio’s position came under the spotlight this week after he said he had sacked one officer and ordered an investigation into 15 others who were allegedly involved in corrupt practices in the registry.

An officer in the registry claimed yesterday that Wagambio had not been properly appointed and that no one had been sacked as reported.

Attempts to get comments from Wagambio yesterday were unsuccessful.

Solomon however confirmed that Wagambio’s appointment as registrar was legal and gazetted.

She said Wagambio took over the office as general secretary of civil registry after former registrar Betty Billy’s appointment was revoked. She said Billy’s contract had expired.

Wagambio had retired but was asked to return to the department because there was no one qualified to fill the position.
