A POLICE officer is in custody for allegedly shooting a man’s knee cap with a police-issued firearm in Port Moresby, crimes division assistant commissioner Victor Isouve said yesterday.
Isouve said the officer shot the victim after robbing him of beer, money and mobile phones while attending a road accident at Konedobu on March 23.
“The officer is attached to the Port Moresby town police station.
“He was arrested yesterday (Tuesday) and charged with unlawful wounding and armed robbery.
“He is now being detained at the Waigani police station.”
Isouve said the suspect with other officers on a motorised patrol came across an accident where a car bumped into a rail near the police headquarters.
They checked the car and found the passengers to be drunk. Instead of helping them, the suspect robbed their mobile phones, money and beer.
“The occupants then questioned why they were being robbed, but the suspect became angry and shot the victim.”
