Officer in robbery case denied bail

A NATIONAL Capital District police officer was remanded by the Waigani Committal Court after he was wrongly granted police bail on an armed robbery charge.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar told Insp Noel Levi, 46, that only the National and Supreme Court had the power to grant bail on criminal offences involving armed robbery and use of live ammunition.
Insp Levi, from Kavieng’s Lemakot in New Ireland, appeared before Bidar on charges of armed robbery, abuse of office and malicious damage.
He is alleged to have on April 1, 2018, carried an assault rifle and led a team of policemen to raid a shop Gordon. Insp Levi allegedly fired shots in the shop premises where he ordered a police party comprising Stanley Tembon, Nelson Mamesa Sapul, Sebastian Savitas, Isreal Henry to enter the premises without a search warrant.
It is alleged that Insp Levi and his men forcefully broke open the locks of two stores and a 20 feet storage container and removed cartons of beer, cigarettes, flex cards, laptops and mobile phones belonging to the shop workers.
Insp Levi and his men allegedly entered the premises without a search warrant and damaged properties worth K27,955.65 and stole K741,337.30 worth of properties and K309,103.
The matter was brought to the attention of the police commissioner.
The Internal Investigation Unit investigated and arrested Insp Levi who was released on K1,000 police bail.
Bidar remanded Levi after reading him his charges and ordered a refund of his bail money.
The case was adjourned to Nov 29 for mention.

  • You call this Levi person an officer I don’t think he deserves that tile, he should be addressed as criminal Noel Levi and his fellow offenders as terrorist.
