A POLICE officer in West Sepik is under investigation for allegedly releasing 18 suspects from detention without approval, says provincial commander Moses Ibsagi.
He said the suspects were charged with burning down 13 houses at Yangkok after a man killed a villager.
“Relatives of the deceased then retaliated and killed the man.
“The man’s relatives then burnt down 13 houses belonging to the relatives of the attackers. All these suspects each had 13 charges of arson while two received additional charges of murder.
“They had appeared before the Aitape district court and were being remanded at the police station in preparation to be transferred to Vanimo prison.
“The district court had also transferred their cases to the Vanimo district court.
“At 4am last Friday, they escaped, allegedly aided by a police officer.”
