Officers convicted of manslaughter
FOUR policemen in East New Britain have been found guilty and convicted of manslaughter by the National Court in East New Britain.
Joe Ngotngot, David Haro, Jack Bemau and John Eric appeared on Wednesday charged with manslaughter following the death of Wesley Kenny in Warangoi, Pomio district, in 2015. The four were members of a police response unit then.
The court heard that the police officers had gone to Kenny’s house and woke him up. The officers told him and his parents to show them the marijuana garden near their house.
Kenny denied owning a garden of marijuana, saying he had a paid job.
He was taken to then garden and assaulted and hit with a cocoa stump while on the ground.
He was repeatedly kicked and punched by the officers and eventually died. The father requested the officers to stop after seeing his son badly injured but he was sworn at and told to shut-up.
The court will sentenced them on Sept 11.
