POLICE Minister Jelta Wong has assured more than 60 police officers and their families facing eviction from the Gordon barracks that they will be relocated to Bomana.
He said the eviction began last year to move all officers to the quarters at Bomana.
“As the city grows, we have to make plans for the future.
“The officers that were residing in the single quarters barracks have all been moved to the newly built houses at Bomana,” he said.
But the police officers and families remaining in the “condemned” barracks at Gordon are uncertain about their future.
They have formed a committee to raise funds to pay a lawyer to take their eviction case to court.
One of the officers said some of them had been in the constabulary for more than 20 years.
“We have children and grandchildren.
“Although space is inadequate in the single quarters, at least we have a roof over our heads,” he said.
“The single quarters block, although condemned by the NCDC health authorities last year, has been home to many officers for years.”
The officer said there were no relocation plans.
They have just been told to pack their belongings and leave in two weeks’ time.
“Some of us were transferred from other provinces and not given a house.
“So we moved into the single quarters with our families. Some of us are not on the list to move to Bomana because of the shortage of houses. Where will we go?”
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Pero N’Dranou said he was not aware of the housing arrangements or the eviction and could not comment on the matter.
