POLICE officers living in barracks in Port Moresby without legal spouses and without marriage certificates will be evicted immediately, NCD and Central command Assistant Commissioner Donald Yamasombi says.
He and a team of internal affairs and NCD barracks’ commandants yesterday conducted a spot check on 150 houses at the new Bomana Police Barracks.
“We want police officers with a stable family to live in the barracks,” Yamasombi said.
“This is so that when on duty, they will effectively serve the community.
“Officers with family problems don’t perform effectively, as most of the time they are attending to their marriage problems.
“It affects the general performance of the police force.”
Yamasombi said they would check other barracks in Port Moresby.
“I’m taking this initiative because I have found out that officers with marriage problems become abusive towards members of the communities which they are serving,” he said. “They also have poor performance and poor discipline.
“That is bad because discipline starts in their houses before they come on duty.”
Yamasombi said that dismissed police officers and officers not attached to any units would also be evicted. “Houses must be free so genuine officers living outside of the barracks will move into houses currently occupied by officers who are not entitled to them,” Yamasombi said.
