THE sacrifice made Correctional Services officers who died on duty should not be taken for granted, says Correctional Services Minister Roy Biyama.
He told prison officers during a memorial service at the Reverend Sioni Kami Memorial Church in Port Moresby yesterday that their colleagues who died during the Bougainville crisis made the ultimate sacrifice for peace.
“Our fallen comrades dedicated and sacrificed themselves for a cause,” Biyama said.
Commissioner Michael Waipo said it was an important day on their annual calendar as they paid homage to colleagues who died in the line of duty.
“CS chose this day, January 17, as the remembrance day in respect of the first ever casualty suffered in the Bougainville Crisis in 1990,” he said.
“Everyone should know that Remembrance Day is not only for those who have been missing in action but also those who were injured during the course of duties and are still living.
“We should all learn from the mistakes, and lessons that they have left behind, so that we can move on to achieve better things in life.”
