PEOPLE in the Tabar group of Islands have been educated about law and order issues by police mobile squad officers at Simberi Mine, in New Ireland.
Five police officers working at the mine site conduct community policing for the locals.
Sergeant  Ambrose Kesilome said rape and adultery were common on the islands. Police arrest and charge suspects before sending them to Kavieng.
“Big cases such as killing and rape or incest on minors, natural disaster deaths are left to the criminal investigation division from the police in town to investigate,” Kesilome said.
“Most locals understand the effects of the brewing of alcohol and the sale of marijuana but few youths still involve themselves with these illegal activities,” Kesilome said.
Kavieng police detective Sergeant Jimmy Tipand osaid the Government should look at sending health workers to remote islands of the country because some people had lost their lives while trying to access health care.
“Thirteen people including children were on a 25-footer boat which capsized about 500 meters near Tatau Island due to bad weather and lack of treatment facility on the island,” Tipando said.
