Officers to get certificates, firearm permits after completing workshop

A GROUP of 11 police officers will be given certificates and firearm permits after completing a workshop, says Met Sup Perou N’dranou.
The firearm permit will allow them to use a firearm while on duty in Port Moresby.
N’dranou said there had been too many complaints against police on the abuse of firearms.
“I am making a change to the firearm use system. (The current one) is not giving enough assurance and guidance to police officers to ensure that they use it properly.”
He said training was a prerequisite to using a gun.
“The certificate together with a firearm permit will be awarded to officers after next week’s shooting range. This will qualify officers to use firearm in the National Capital District command. It does not cover any other police command,” N’dranou said.
He said this was to address police brutality and decrease claims against police for the illegal use of force.
Any member of the Port Moresby Police wishing to possess or carry a gun must attend the training and obtain a permit which will be renewed annually.
