Official: Early ICT skills vital

Education

TEACHING information and communication technology (ICT) skills to children at an early age is vital for their development, University of Goroka (UoG) Pro-Vice Chancellor policy and planning Donald Gumbis says.
He said this during a gathering where internet connectivity was being introduced for the first time to rural based schools in the Unggai-Bena, Eastern Highlands.
Gumbis said many students entering universities and secondary schools found it difficult to understand computer usages and functions for learning purposes.
“I commend local ISP provider Comsat for their initiative in providing wifi and internet services to the Unggai Primary School,” he said.
“Comsat managing director Wilson Unua is from the area and what he has done is commendable.
“We at UoG are all about building partnerships and our partnerships currently make strong foundations in nation building through students accessing internet for learning purposes.”
Gumbis said in this digitalised world, library books would become outdated after five years.
He said children needed to upgrade their knowledge to experience quality education.
Comsat opened the new Dege Unua computer lab at Unggai Primary School this week.
Unua provided similar assistance to Bena Adventist Primary School at Sigoya and Arikayufa Primary School, both in the Unggai-Bena.
