Official: Medical journal bank of knowledge, national asset
THE Papua New Guinea Medical Journal has been publishing medical research for the last 60 years and was due for recognition and support, an official says.
UPNG School of Medicine and Health Science executive dean Dr Nakapi Tefurani said the journal’s 60 years of existence was celebrated in Goroka last year.
“Basically, it is a bank of knowledge that is valuable, available and a national asset,” he said.
Tefuarani said it was another great achievement of the medical fraternity.
He said the medical journal was the national flag carrier of medical research hence the Government needed to see it as a national asset.
Tefuarani said the Government needed to honour a commitment made at 2005 and 2017 medical symposiums to financially support the journal.
The journal is owned by the Medical Society of PNG and was first published in 1958 and includes original papers and reviews on all aspects of medicine with priority given to articles and subjects relevant to the practice of medicine in PNG and other countries in the Pacific.
Tefuarani said the Medical Society of PNG had maintained a high standard.
“I am proud of the PNG Medical Journal’s reputation as being an internationally referenced journal.”
