THE Northern Conference of the National Soccer League (NSL) lacks competitiveness due to poor resilience, fitness and structured football, according to High Performance Sports Papua New Guinea Mamose coordinator Alfred Tei.
He said that after watching six rounds of competition in which defending champions Lae City maintained a perfect start with big wins.
“All the teams have their goals which is why they are playing in the league,” Tei said.
“But do they have a goal to play against their opponents?
“The gap between most of the NSL teams and City is not what spectators expect.
“Teams must have mental toughness and determination to achieve something.
“If it is to win, they must fight for it. But sadly, it is not there.
“Psychology is an element that must be a priority before, during and after training sessions and matches.
“I do not know if coaches give attention to this.
“There must also be focus on structured football.
“Skills and tactics rely on fitness.
“So if there is no good foundation, the structure in unstable and too much interaction or isolation by players can affect their games.”
Tei said combinations were still lacking with teams still finding their feet in their transitional play.
