PAPUA New Guineans are connected to their environment and need to protect the resources they have, an official said.
Port Moresby Nature Park manager Michelle McGeorge said locals were connected to the land and they understood the importance of nature and the environment around them.
She said this included fish in the sea and the trees on land.
McGeorge said this during World Environment Day celebration at the Port Moresby Nature Park, Wiagani, which featured stalls by 32 organisations last Saturday.
“PNG has been celebrating World Environment Day over the last few years that I have been here,” McGeorge said.
She said the major issue was waste management which had the biggest impact on the environment and Papua New Guineans needed to consider using ‘bulims’ for shopping and carrying goods.
She added that the use of plastics was damaging the environment, especially when they were not disposed of properly.
“The environment is under different pressures so we celebrate World Environment Day and the message to people is that they can make a difference by taking small steps at home in protecting the environment,” she said.
