Officials meet for city project
The National, Tuesday March 25th, 2014
ADVICE on the redevelopment of the notorious Gordon’s Market came thick and fast yesterday in the midst of a two-day UN Safe Cities Programme workshop in Port Moresby.
For National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop they could not have come at a better time – just when police had made the market a special project to rid it of crime and violence.
Among his redevelopment plan for the market is improving its management, waste management, flood mitigation and security.
The workshop saw vendors, technical experts, donor agencies, UN Women and NCDC management provide advice on the market’s redevelopment.
“A year ago I made a public commitment to the upgrading of Gordon’s Market after hearing how unhappy the public felt with the dangers of this market and its deteriorating facilities, which included poor management, waste piling up and rogue security,” Parkop said.
He said that under the Safe Cities Programme, partners had come up with strategic plans about how the market could be best improved.
UN country representative of UN Women PNG Dr Jeffrey Buchanan said: “The Safe Cities Programme seeks to create a safer market for women so that they feel protected and empowered.”
