OFFICIALS working on selecting a Papua New Guinea team to the World Soccer Masters in Auckland, New Zealand, next year are planning to stage a national masters championship, committee chairman John Yami says.

Yami told The National that selections for the team are still open for former and current soccer players.

Those who are interested were to submit their names to the organising committee.

He said Port Moresby-based players have been training for a month while interested individuals from outside centres had been invited to be part of the team.

“Those in training will continue to do so until others join after the championship and other tournaments,” Yami said.

He said as part of their training, they would be competing in the PKA Charity Cup during the Easter weekend and at a friendly at Kaparoko, along the Magi Highway, Central.

Players eligible to play in masters are those aged 40 and above.

“An increasing number of deaths in the country are caused by stress and stroke so we want players to join and train to keep fit,” Yami said.
