OHE awaits uni’s list for scholarships

THE Office of Higher Education (OHE) has announced an increase of 700 more scholarship placing for next year with an additional funding of K1.5 million.

OHE director general Dr William Tagis announced that more than 10,000 students would benefit under the Tertiary Education Scholarship Assistance Scheme next year.

“We have in total 10,015 for next year at the total cost of about K33 million. For first year students, we have 4,605 and 6,410 for continuing students,” Tagis said.

He said OHE was three weeks behind in putting out announcement of student scholarships because of the delay by major universities and other tertiary institutions in submitting full listing of students who will benefit from the scholarships.

“We have received awards for first year students this week but are still waiting for a complete list of students from University of PNG and Kokopo Business College (KBC), who have submitted a wrong list,” Tagis said,  appealing to the two institutions to act quickly before  the start of the school year.

Tagis said he had received 4,410 awards, and that left out 1,563 for UPNG and 200 for KBC.

“We are still waiting for list from UPNG school of law and humanities, business administration and economics,” Tagis said.

He said they were also waiting for Education Department to give the list of graduates for the year.

Tagis said some institutions would be resuming school in two weeks time and they were waiting to publish the full listing on the student awards.

“Travel arrangements may be late if we don’t get the lists on time so I am appealing for those names to be forwarded quickly by the department and the institutions.”
