DEFENDING Pacific Games champion Linda Pulsan set a powerlifting masters world record last night in the women’s 72kg squat.

The 44-year-old squatted 183.5kg  to reach the mark after failing last month at the World Championships in Finland. Pulsan claimed the gold medal and could have added an open world record but was disqualified  in her attempt at 186.5kg.

Papua New Guinea won a total of six gold, two silver and a bronze on a successful opening day.

Pulsan earned her Games title by deadlifting 195kg and bench pressed 97.5kg for the highest total in her division. PNG Powerlifting  president Raymond Haoda said their target was to win eight gold medals on Day 1 but six was a great effort.

Other winners for PNG were: Hitolo Kevau (47kg women, gold), Navili Benson (47kg women, silver), Dobi Mea (52kg women, gold) and Belinda Umang (57kg women, gold), Kalau Andrew (59kg men, gold), Melissa Tikio (63kg women, gold), Henry Kelo (66kg men, silver), Brown Bolong (66kg men, bronze).
