A GANG of four armed robbers were crippled last week with the arrest of one suspect that ended in a shootout with police.
One robber was shot in the leg and another was captured.
Police recovered a car, a homemade gun and ammunition.
Acting National Capital District (NCD)/Central Asst Comm Anthony Wagambie Jr said the four armed men were on foot at about 10am in Gerehu Stage 4 when they robbed the occupants of a car and drove away in the vehicle to Ensisi Valley.
“The public called the NCD Telikom toll-free number to report. A Zone 1 support unit then rushed to the scene,” he said.
“One was caught in the car and the others managed to run away.
Wagambie said policemen chased the trio up the hill between Ensisi and June Valley.
“When the policemen closed in on them, the three started shooting and the cops returned fire, shooting one in the leg,” he said.
“But the two managed to carry their injured colleague and disappeared in the jungle.”
In another robbery at about 6.30pm last Tuesday in Vadvada, four robbers pulled their car alongside another and held up its occupants.
“The victims were forced out of their car which the robbers drove away,” Wagambie said.
“Again, police received a tip off on the toll-free line and Zone 3 support unit in the vicinity chased the robbers who lost control of their steering and drove into a drain at Manu Auto port.
“The robbers, however, managed to escape on foot but the stolen car was recovered with the key still in the ignition.”
Wagambie said NCD had a high rate of armed robberies, carjacking and car thefts, with about six to 10 reports a week.
He thanked the public for using the toll-free number.
