PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill yesterday opened the Boluminsky Highway in New Ireland, saying it will change the way people there live.
He also announced the redevelopment of Kavieng airport, including the extension of the runway, a new stadium and town at Bopire in Namatanai.
“Infrastructure development in our country is very important to us to take services to the communities,” he said.
“Road infrastructure such as the Boluminsky Highway will bring changes to people’s lives.
“This highway will (facilitate) the easy and smooth transportation of goods and services.
“Economic development takes place when there is better infrastructure and it provides opportunities for the community to benefit greatly.
“This highway opens opportunities for small-medium enterprises (SMEs) to create new businesses in the province, and access markets around the country and overseas.
“It also makes it easier to deliver services to communities that are difficult to reach.
“The important thing is that there is strong demand for this infrastructure and we know that new infrastructure developments such as roads, airports, bridges and wharves are put to great use by our people.”
O’Neill said there were major projects underway such as the electrification programme which would see 70 per cent of the population get electricity by 2030.
