O’Neill to launch Sepik agro project

PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill is expected to visit East Sepik next Monday to launch a chicken, grain and cocoa innovation project and officiate at number of occasions.
According to Trade Commerce and Industry Minister Richard Maru, the project would be developed by the Kumul Consolidated Holdings and Israeli investor company LR Group.
This project is the first serious investment in commercial agriculture in the Sepik Plains special economic zone.
Maru said in a statement that preparations were progressing smoothly in the province to receive the prime minister.
Other announcements to be made by O’Neill include:

  • Funding to complete the renovation and upgrading of the Boram Hospital. Release initial funding for the revitalising of the Boram School of Nursing in preparation for the initial enrolments next year;
  • The Government’s decision for the immediate development of an international wharf at Wewak to service the needs of the Sepik Plains economic zone and the proposed Frieda copper mine; and,
  • The opening of the Yangoru township water supply system and the Kwakwie to Yangoru station 7.5km sealed road.

It is understood the people of East Sepik would also present a proposal to O’Neill for a state farewell programme for Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare as he prepares to leave politics after more than 40 years in Parliament since 1968.
